SEO Glossary

Validation
The process of checking web content, such as HTML or CSS files, to ensure they are compliant with published guidelines. Validation is an optional, but highly recommended, step in the process of publishing webpages online. By adhering to web standards, authors can ensure that their pages would render as they intended them to on users' computers. Unfortunately, web browsers such as Microsoft's Internet Explorer do not care about validation and web standards. As a result, rendering non-compliant, non-validated pages can lead to unpredictable results.

Validator
A program or website that can perform validation on a webpage or site. See validation, above.

Viral marketing
A type of marketing strategy that involves customers in the marketing and promotion process.

Virtual domain
A domain name that does not truly exist on its own physical server. Rather, it is hosted under one main domain. It is possible to have multiple virtual domains on one single server. This is done by the appropriate configuration of the web server software.

Visibility
The measure of how easy it is to find a website using a search engine. The most visible sites are those that have higher rankings and appear at the upper positions in search engine result listings, hence, visibility can also refer to relevance.

VOIP
Acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol. This is a protocol for converting voice into IP packets and sending them over an IP network such as the Internet. VOIP is quickly becoming a very important service and it has the potential to replace the conventional telephone service.

VPN
Acronym for Virtual Private Network. A VPN can be thought of as an extension of a corporate LAN, accessible through public switched networks such as the Internet and secured by encryption and tunnelling protocols.

VRML
Acronym for Virtual Reality Modeling Language.
