P2P
Acronym for Peer to Peer.

Packet sniffing
The process of capturing IP packets in real-time as they are received and transmitted from a PC. This is done for diagnostic or research purposes, but can also be used to snoop on private data that travels in and out of the PC.

Page jacking
Stealing of pages from websites to use in one's own website.

Page Rank
A ranking method created by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, co-founders of Google. It is the primary ranking algorithm used by the Google search engine. Page Rank works by analyzing a site's inbound links and assigning a ranking based on the number of such links and, most importantly, the quality of the links, which is determined in part by the Page Rank of the sites from which the links originate.

Paid inclusion
Paid inclusion refers to a listing in a search engine that is bought and paid for. Most search engines have paid inclusion programs. Paying for a listing ensures that a site would be given good visibility within search results for a given search query. It also ensures that a site would be regularly monitored by the search engine, so search engine users would always see the most updated listing.

Pay-for-performance
A pricing model based on successful sales

Pay per click
Pay per click is a pricing model for search engine ads. The advertiser pays the search engine hosting the ads for every click that the ad gets. The most prominent advertising programs that use a PPC scheme include Google's AdSense and AdWords.

PDF
Standard filename extension for Portable Document Format files. Also refers to the Portable Document Format file format from Adobe.

Perl
Acronym for Practical Extraction and Reporting Language, a high-level scripting language created by Larry Wall. It is popular among Unix and Linux system administrators because of its power, features, and extreme flexibility. It is also one of the more popular CGI programming languages.

PFI

PFP
Acronym for Pay For Performance, Pay For Placement.

PNG
Acronym for Portable Network Graphics. Also, the standard filename extension for PNG files.

POP3
Acronym for Post Office Protocol.

Popunder
A type of popup window that appears under open browser windows instead of over. See Popup.

Popup
The original web nuisance, a window that pops up over all browser windows when visiting certain sites. Such windows usually contain ads or links to spyware-installing sites.

Portal
A portal site, or simply portal, is a type of website that collects and displays summarized content from varied sources. Users interested to know more than what the summaries present may visit the websites from which the summarized content is taken. A portal is essentially a site that can lead to many other websites. Yahoo remains to be one of the major portal sites; the Yahoo homepage contains news, articles, features, and other types of content from many different sites.

Positioning
Positioning, in the context of search engine optimization, is the strategic placement of websites' listings. Optimal positioning is a common tactic in search engine optimization, because top search positions ensure visibility and popularity for a site.

PPC
Acronym for Pay Per Click. See Pay per click.

PPCSE
Acronym for Pay Per Click Search Engines.

Pay per lead
Pay per lead is a payment scheme similar to pay per click, but pay per lead involves paying the advertising search engine for every visitor that is led to the website. In marketing terms, such potential customers are called leads.

PPR
Acronym for Pay Per Rank.

PPV
Acronym for Pay Per Visitor.

PR0
Acronym for Page Rank zero. In Google's Page Rank scale, a website may have a rank from zero to 10, with 10 being the highest ranking a website could possibly be assigned. A Page Rank value of zero for a site either means that the site is new or has been penalized by Google for any reason.

PSA
Acronym for Public Service Announcement, a type of banner ad that is displayed by websites and search engines as a free public service.

PubCon
Acronym for WebmasterWorld Publishers Conference.

Pull-down list
Also called a dropdown list. A pull-down list is a type of element in web pages that is used for lists. They appear as a single selection with an arrow button beside it. If a user wishes to change the default selection, he may click on the arrow button to pull down a list. The list appears to expand in a downward direction, as if being pulled downwards, hence the name pull-down list.
