LAMP
Acronym for Linux Apache MySQL PHP/Perl/Python. This is a very popular web server configuration, consisting of the Apache web server with PHP, Perl, or Python extensions, a MySQL back-end for dynamic content, all running on the Linux operating system.

LAN
Acronym for Local Area Network.

Landing page
The specific page on a site that a visitor first reaches after clicking on a search engine search result. Sites aim to have well-designed landing pages that would keep site visitors interested longer and maybe even convert visitors into customers, so landing pages are areas given special attention by web designers and marketers.

Legacy application
A legacy application is a piece of software that is old or coming from an earlier era, as far as programming trends is concerned. For example, legacy applications may be limited to using pure text output, while newer, non-legacy, applications may be fully graphical in nature. Compatibility of newer software with legacy software is called backward compatibility. This is an important consideration in software design.

Link
An abbreviation for hypertext link, or hyperlink.

Linkage
Linkage refers to how well a site is connected to other sites through inbound and outbound links. A site with good linkage to other sites would often have high ranks with search engines.

Link farm
Link farms are websites that do not have any real content of their own. Rather, they feature listings upon listings of links to other sites. Link farms may be penalized by search engines, in the context of search engine optimization.

Link building
A search engine optimization technique where one increases the number and quality of incoming links from external sources with the aim of increasing a website's link popularity, thus helping to increase a website's ranking with search engines. Link building may involve techniques such as link exchanges.

Link popularity
A measure of how heavily linked to a page is, based on the number of incoming links directly into that page. The more incoming links to a page, the greater that page's link popularity.

Linkrot
Linkrot refers to links “deteriorating” over time. As websites are updated, pages are added, removed or renamed, links to these pages have to be updated to reflect the changes in URLs. Links that do not get updated return 404 errors to site visitors attempting to access those links.

Link text
Another name for anchor text.

Link reputation
Link reputation is a measure of the quality of a link according to its link text or anchor text.

Linux
Linux is an operating system created by Linus Torvalds being developed and maintained by a worldwide community of programmers. It is an open source operating system; anybody can modify the source code and submit their modifications to it for inclusion into the official source code. Because it is open, it is easier to tailor to one's specific needs. It is fast, secure, efficient, and supports a great number of platforms.

Listing
A listing may be short for search engine results listing, which is the list of sites and pages that satisfy a given seasrch query or criteria. Search engine results pages are listings of such sites and pages.

Log file
In the context of web servers, a log file is used to record all activity within a web server, including connections from computers, file requests and hits, origins of connections, user authentication, as well as error conditions.

LS
Acronym for  LookSmart.

Logger
Any program that records user activities. A web server may have a logger that maintains the server log files (see log file, above). Other types of logger programs include programs that track referrals from advertisers.

LookSmart
One of the largest directories on the Internet.

LVHA
An acronym for Link Visited Hover Active, CSS coding nomenclature.

Lycos
A large search engine. Owns Wired Digital which owns the HotBot search engine. Also owns Tripod free home page site. Primary search results are returned from the ODP. With follow-up by their own proprietary spider.
